Embrace the Summer Sun with Yoga and Ayurveda

As the summer sun shines, it's the perfect time to connect with the energy of the season.

It can be hugely beneficial for your wellbeing to harmonise your activities with nature, drawing from ancient wisdom to help you feel balanced, energised, and at peace.

Summer offers a unique opportunity to tap into it’s vibrant energy, to elevate your wellbeing.

The Power of Summer: Yoga and Ayurveda in Harmony

In Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, each season is associated with a specific ‘dosha’, or energy type. Summer is governed by the fiery Pitta dosha, characterised by heat, intensity, and transformation. While this energy can be invigorating, it’s important to stay balanced to avoid burnout.

Yoga and Ayurveda together offer a holistic approach to feeling good during the summer months. By aligning your practice with Ayurvedic principles, you can harness the power of the Pitta season to enhance your physical and mental wellbeing.

Energising Practices for Your Summer Yoga Routine

Even in our milder South Wales summer, the energy of the season invites us to refresh and renew our yoga practice. Here are some great ways to energise your routine:

1 - Revitalise with Morning Sun Salutations:

We often begin practice with Sun Salutations to awaken the mind and body, but during this time of year more focus can be attached to the sequence, thinking about harnessing the energy of the sun to build heat, spark motivation, and to energise you for the day ahead.

2 - Embrace Outdoor Yoga:

Take advantage of the lighter mornings and milder weather by joining outdoor yoga. Connecting with nature deepens your practice, grounding you in the present moment, feeling the warming sun and soothing breeze. This awareness of the natural world helps us to keep our perspective of the bigger picture, and not to sweat the small stuff.

3 - Give Pilates a Try:

If you regularly practise yoga then it’s a great time to use your heightened energy to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Pilates is great at firing up the core, strengthening the body, leading to an improved yoga practice. Remember: growth happens outside of your comfort zone!

Ayurvedic Tips for Summer Wellness

Beyond your yoga practice, these Ayurvedic tips can help you stay balanced:

1 - Lighten Up Your Diet:

Opt for lighter, easy-to-digest meals with plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits, and cooling herbs like mint and coriander. These help to balance the busy, high energy we can sometimes feel during summer.

2 - Connect with the Season:

Take advantage of the fine weather days to enjoy walks in the park or countryside, boosting both your physical and mental health. Blackberry picking anyone?

3 - Refresh with Cooling Aromas:

Using essential oils like peppermint, lavender, or eucalyptus will help keep your mind clear and focused, reducing stress and feelings of overwhelm and burn-out.
