Yin Yoga - probably the Class You Need the Most

When you look at a timetable, it’s easy to feel you choose something more 'active' - a flow class, a Pilates session, something that feels like you’re doing more.

And so, for many people, the class they skip — Yin — is often the one their body is quietly asking for.

Yin Yoga is slower. It’s floor-based. We hold simple shapes for longer periods of time. And because of that, it’s often misunderstood as “just stretching” or something optional.

But it offers something very different, yet very important to the rest of your week.

What Yin Actually Does

Most forms of movement — whether it’s Pilates, strength training or flow yoga — focus on the muscles. They build strength, create heat, and improve fitness.

Yin works a little deeper. By staying in postures for longer, the practice begins to affect the connective tissues, joints and fascia — areas of the body that don’t respond in the same way to faster movement.

This is what helps support mobility, reduce persistent tightness, and bring a different kind of balance to the body.

The Part We Often Overlook

There’s also something else happening in Yin that isn’t always obvious — it gives your body time to shift out of constant “doing mode”.

Most of us move quickly through the week. Even when we stop, the mind doesn’t always follow - it remains active and drains our energy. We can feel tired, but not properly rested. Still, but not fully settled.

Yin creates space for that shift.

Through stillness and breath, the body begins to soften. The nervous system settles. And over time, this supports better sleep, clearer thinking, and a deeper sense of calm.

HOW It Complements Everything Else

If you already attend Pilates, go to the gym, run, or come to flow classes, Yin isn’t there to replace those things. Instead, it supports them.

It helps release the tension that builds up. It allows the body time to recover. It brings balance to practices that are more effort-based. In many ways, it’s the piece that’s often missing.

And interestingly, the people who tend to avoid Yin — because it feels slow, or unfamiliar — are often the ones who benefit from it most!
